Building a Weather-Ready Nation requires partners and the latest science and technology. Today, with the help of Senator Maria Cantwell and others, the NWS is taking a step in that direction by commissioning a new coastal radar in Washington state that is going online a year ahead of schedule. The radar is positioned west of the Olympic Mountains to improve the detection of severe storms approaching Washington’s coast. The state-of-the-art Doppler radar is equipped with dual polarization, the latest enhancement in radar technology for civilian weather forecasting.
